Week One - Task #01. “The Day After”

Postby Prof. Sindor Aloyarc » Sat Nov 01, 2025 12:42 pm

You and the others feel it in your bones. The hollowness of a name missing from the air.

Pipkin. He was there. You remember him on the fringes of Halloween. Then the clock struck midnight and he vanished.

The Pumpkin Tree stands before you. A great dark thing, half-alive, its many pumpkins aglow with searching eyes. Not orange anymore. Now they dazzle in shades of memory: pale blue and dusty bronze in the burning candlelight.

One pumpkin right in the center has gone dark. That was his. You recognize Pipkin’s eyes in the carving.

Halloween might be over for the world, but for you, it’s just begun. Somewhere, lost in time or shadow or sorrow, Pipkin is waiting to be found.

Finns don't really dress up for Halloween (though it's becoming somewhat popular), but I've seen mentioned that a lot of kids, girls especially, want to dress up as characters from K-pop Demon Hunters.

I was surprised how popular the movie became, even among non K-Pop fans. Apparently, the music is really good and the movie itself is really colourful. I've seen costumes from the USA on this year's Halloween that had kids dressed in the group's stage outfits, with bright jackets, shiny decorations, and amazing hairstyles.

I also think it’s great to see something from South Korea (K-pop) become so popular in other places.

While I don't go out or dress up for Halloween anymore, I've taken a liking to horror costumes rather than the more family-friendly variety. However, that's obviously because I'm an adult who wouldn't be terrified of it. I like a good authentically unnerving costume, ideally based on books, movies, or TV shows. However, I've always been far more impressed by the effort put into costumes than by what they actually are. I will never knock down a costume that someone made themselves, even if it's not something I'd particularly like, because that's still far more effort than most people (including myself) would go to. I'm a sucker for some SFX or prosthetic makeup to really seal the costume in, like I saw someone create button eyes and a pointed nose for a Coraline costume.
